Description

Themes Present in A Young Patriot

AIM: SWBAT determine themes present in A Young Patriot by analyzing the text and providing text-based evidence.

Plan for Understanding Theme:

Step 1: Find the “big ideas” or general topics in the text.

Step 2: Find out what the characters do and say that relates to the general topic.

Step 3: Come up with a statement of the author’s point or message of the topic.

Writing about Theme:

1. TOPIC SENTENCE: Sentence that names the ___________________ or big idea.

2. BODY: Examples that _________________ what the characters do or say that relates to the topic.

3. CLOSING SENTENCE: _____________________ statement of what is important to learn.

Tips for Creating Theme Statements:

·       Make a point: The theme statement needs to be a complete sentence that makes a point.

·       Avoid using Vague Words: Be as precise as you can concerning what particular message about life the writer is trying to get across. Stay clear of abstract words such as “good” or “bad.”

·       Avoid using Character Names: A good theme statement applies to people in general, not just to the specific characters in the story.
